It’s Minority Mental Health Awareness month! Time to get the culturally competent care you deserve

7/28/2025

Did you know it’s currently Minority Mental Health Awareness Month?

Mental health affects everyone, but not everyone gets the same support, treatment, or even understanding. For communities of colour, the challenges are heavier, the resources fewer, and stigma louder.

While Minority Mental Health Awareness month may not get the attention it deserves, we are actively working to change that through the support we provide.

Globally, about 1 in 8 people live with a mental health disorder—that’s nearly 970 million people. But when you zoom in on marginalised groups, especially Black, Brown, Latinx, Indigenous, and other communities of colour, the numbers reveal a grimmer picture.

For example, studies show that Black adults are 20% more likely to experience serious psychological distress than white adults. But here’s the kicker—they’re less likely to receive mental health services. And when they do seek help, they often face misdiagnosis, discrimination, or flat-out dismissal.

Oftentimes, cultural stigmas and religious beliefs can also play a part in refusing mental health care. In many communities of colour, mental health still feels taboo and the following phrases may pop up:

  • “Just pray about it.”
  • “What happens in the family, stays in the family.”
  • “Therapy is for white people.”

These cultural attitudes are often born from generational trauma and mistrust in institutions which make it hard to talk openly about mental health. This silence is hurting our communities of colour.

We deserve more.

By now, we hope you know our mantra at Tala Thrive -> It’s exhausting to educate your therapist.

This is why our founder Sonia Kaurah created Tala Thrive to tackle cultural nuances and stigmas. “Nothing is built specifically for communities of colour and that’s just not good enough anymore.”

We are boldly making mental health care more inclusive, culturally competent, and accessible for underserved communities around the world.

Culturally competent care isn’t just a fancy term—it means mental health professionals and coaches who understand your background, language, religion, struggles, and cultural context.

It’s a therapist who doesn’t clutch their pearls when you talk about growing up in a multigenerational household.

It’s a coach who understands why you have to pick up a call from your mother mid-session.

It’s one who actually gets why immigration trauma and racism can mess with your head.

It’s about respect, representation, and relatability.

This Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, let us connect you with culturally competent therapists and coaches who understand your culture, language and/or religion, and can help you work through your generational trauma with sensitivity, tenderness, and care.

Please book your first session today at Tala Thrive and join our community to get the support you need.

Remember, we want you to thrive - mentally, physically, and emotionally - so you can start living the life you truly deserve.
