Studying Abroad and Struggling? You're Not Failing - You're Carrying a Lot.

May 18, 2026

Moving to a new country to study takes real courage. But nobody tells you about the other side of it.

The homesickness that hits at 2am. Missing those warm and yummy meals made by mum. The financial pressure you face every other day. The constant visa anxiety. The feeling of being surrounded by people and still completely alone. And that constant fear in the heart, of missing out - on life, love or time with family.

59% of international students showed symptoms of depression, and 36% showed symptoms of anxiety. Not because they're weak - but just because they're doing something genuinely hard, often without the support systems they grew up with, without their family and friends and without that familiar environment.

And here's what makes it actually harder: most of the mental health support available doesn't even actually fit.

It doesn't reflect the cultural context. It doesn't understand the pressure of family expectations from thousands of kilometres away. It doesn't speak to what it means to move countries, adapt, and keep performing - all at the same damn time.

So students don't use it. Not because they don't want help, but because the help doesn't feel like it’s made for them - they don’t feel seen, heard or understood.

Finding Support That Feels Like Home

When you find care that actually gets your background, your culture, the specific kind of exhaustion that comes from building a life somewhere new and it just hits differently. You don't have to spend the first ten minutes of a session explaining where you're from or why your family dynamics are complicated.

But even before you get there - the small stuff counts too.

  • Calling your parents on a Sunday just to hear familiar voices.

  • Sending a voice note to a friend back home.

  • Writing down three things you're proud of navigating this week, even if they seem tiny.

These aren't small things, really. They're the thread that keeps you connected to yourself when everything around you feels unfamiliar.

Taking care of your mental health doesn't have to look like a big decision. It can start with one honest conversation and  with someone who gets it, or even just with yourself.

And remember you are not behind. You are not failing. You are dealing with a lot - and you actually deserve the support that meets you where you are. We are here to support you and connect with culturally competent therapists and coaches who understand your experience - your culture, your background, your story.

Because you shouldn't have to explain your whole life just to feel understood🧡
